Head Start Head Teacher


The Albany Park Community Center, an Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity employer, needs an experienced full-time Head Start Teacher for classroom responsibilities within the agency’s total set of programs and in accordance with city and state licensing requirements, as well as funder requirements. First priority will be given to candidates within Albany Park Community Center (staff and clients).


Work Schedule: Full time Mon. – Fri.


SHARED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Supervises children and all activities, both in the classroom and outside: plans and leads large and small group activities, and free play.

2. Works cooperatively with consultants, specialists, and program staff to: provide an optimal environment to meet each child’s needs and coordinate additional services for children and families.

3. Identifies, researches, prepares, and implements: A classroom environment that best suits the needs of the children in the classroom, Teaching Strategies GOLD, individualized plans and progress reports on each child, developmentally appropriate daily lesson plans that use activities that introduce and reinforce language, small muscle, large muscle, social and emotional skills.

4. Implements and maintains a high quality program in accordance with NAEYC accreditation guidelines and Head Start Performance Standards.

5. Ensures safe and clean classroom and outdoor environments:

6. Prepares reports on classroom activities, including attendance records, screenings, assessments and portfolios.

7. Prepares and implements two parent/teacher conferences, and two home visits, for each family in conjunction with the assistant teacher (home visits are required only for Head Start children).

8. Explains child development, early childhood education and the program philosophy to parents.

9. Attends staff meetings and appropriate professional development workshops.


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

1. Ability to use the tools of information technology.

2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Communication skills in a language other than English are desirable.

3. Demonstrated skills in early childhood education/child development.

Should have the ability to serve a community rich in ethnic, linguistic, cultural, educational, and social diversity, have to follow oral and written instructions, and an understanding of food service procedures.


EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE

BA or advanced degree in early childhood education or in any subject with a minimum of 30 credit hours in ECE coursework. Experience teaching preschool age children. Experience in Head Start and/or Preschool For All, Teaching Strategies GOLD and Bilingual Spanish preferred.

SHARED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Supervises children and all activities, both in the classroom and outside: plans and leads large and small group activities, and free play.

2. Assists in the supervision of classroom volunteers.

3. Assists teacher in ensuring safe and clean classroom and outdoor environments

4. Assists the teacher in planning developmentally appropriate activities, identifying needed supplies, setting up a classroom environment that best suits the needs of the children, preparing materials and activities in advance for the children according to lesson plans, maintaining attendance, food forms, other records, as directed by the teacher and implementing Creative Curriculum for Early Childhood

5. Works cooperatively with consultants, specialists, and program staff to: provide an optimal environment to meet each child’s needs and coordinate additional services for children and families. Also to recruit and train classroom volunteers

6. Assists in implementing and maintaining a high quality program in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards and NAEYC accreditation standards.

7. Attends appropriate CYS meetings, staff meetings, pre-service trainings and in-service trainings as provided.

8. Willingly assumes other duties and responsibilities as may be required or assigned.



KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

1. Ability to use the tools of information technology.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE

Must be at least 19 years of age, with a high school diploma or a GED, plus 6 hours of credits in Early Childhood Education or Child Development.
