Literacy, Adult Education & Family Literacy |
APCC/LIT, the Albany Park Community
Center's Literacy Department, develops and provides educational programs
and social services for adults and their families in the Albany Park community.APCC/LIT
programs are held at 5121 N. Kimball and other off-site locations. APCC/LIT's Adult Literacy
Tutoring program assists lower level English as a Second Language
and Basic Education students with language and reading development skills.
Volunteer tutors and AmeriCorps members teach lessons guided by professional
staff. (Funded by a Community Literacy grant from the State of Illinois,
Secretary of State Literacy Office.) Adult Education program
offers daytime and evening English as a Second Language (ESL) classes
at several levels of instruction. Classes take place on-site and at a
local elementary school. Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED (high school
equivalency) preparation classes are also conducted days and evenings.
Adult students can get GED test information, and take the GED Constitution
test on-site. Citizenship Education Support
Services are also part of adult Education. See below. (Funded by an Adult
Education and Family Literacy grant from the Community College Board.
Citizenship Education -- To help immigrants prepare for naturalization, Citizenship Education classes are held on-site and at a local church. Five classes are available, two bilingual
English/Spanish, covering U.S. history and government; English speaking,
reading, and writing; interview practice. (Funded by grants from the Community College Board and the
Illinois Department of Human Services' Refugee and Immigrant Citizenship
Initiative) Even Start Family Literacy -A Coordinated Program -- Low-income adults
with young children (ages 1-5) can enroll together in educational
programs at APCC. Early childhood education is provided by Head Start
for children ages 3 through 5, while children ages 1 through 3 attend class in special Infant/Toddler room. While their young children are in their
EC classes, parents are enrolled in Adult Education classes (ESL, ABE
& GED). Services for children and adults are provided in one building.
(Family Literacy coordination is funded by a grant from the Illinois Community College Board.) As part of Family Literacy, Parenting education classes are provided on
a weekly basis for enrolled parents. In addition, parents join their children
twice a month in Interactive literacy activities between parents and their children activities to learn about their children's learning
needs and interests. The program also conducts bi-annual domestic violence assessment of
families to identify families living in a violent environment and connect
these families with the appropriate community services to address this
issue. (Parent education, domestic violence prevention, and infant/toddler services are funded by a grant from the City of Chicago Department of Public
Health) Instructional Support
Services - Adult students enrolled in APCC/LIT can receive these
supportive services: computer laboratory (before, during, or after class);
transportation assistance (CTA fare cards to come to school; buses for
field trips); child care during half day and weekend programs; information
information about and referral to community resources. (Support in 2001-2002 for Community Technology Center resources at APCC/LIT are provided by the Illinois Department of Commerce & Community Affair's and its "Eliminate the Digital Divide" program.)
Through APCC's Workforce Development Center, they can take career interest assessments and job placement assistance.
Community Technology Center - APCC's Community Technology Center (CTC) is located at 5121 N. Kimball, 2 nd Floor. The CTC offers basic computer literacy courses: Introduction to Computers, MS Word (Basic), MS Excel (Basic). The Word and Excel courses prepare community members for the Microsoft Office Specialist tests recognized by businesses as a qualification for employment or advancement. Course fees are reasonable, and a good value compared to other computer training providers. New classes begin each month. APCC's CTC also runs a Computer Buying Club.
