Thank You Maureen.
In Memory of Maureen Grady Maureen Grady began volunteering at APCC in the spring of 2007. She tutored in the Adult Literacy and Citizenship Programs, helping adults who were learning English and applying for US citizenship. She provided one-on-one English as a Second Language (ESL) tutoring and helped adult learners prepare for their naturalization interviews. An immigrant from England, Maureen never naturalized herself, but she was passionate about helping others and always gave 100% attention to any learner she was working with.   When Maureen was nominated for the Secretary of State’s Spotlight on Service Award in 2011, she wrote, “I am not giving back to the community. Oh no. I am gaining the gratitude and friendship of the people I meet.” She treated everyone she met here at APCC (staff, students, other volunteers) with kindness and friendship. No one who met her would ever forget her smiles and laughter.   Earlier this fall, Maureen suffered a series of strokes and died on November 11. We are shocked and saddened by her sudden loss, and know that the success of APCC’s Adult Literacy and Citizenship Programs is due in many ways to her unflagging efforts over the past seven years. She had been coming to APCC’s Kimball site regularly on Saturday mornings, and to the class at Cross and Crown Church on Wednesday mornings.   Since Maureen began volunteering in 2007, approximately 500 of our adult learners have become US citizens, and it is likely that Maureen helped the majority of them. During this time she spent 845 hours volunteering at APCC, and we can never thank her enough for this service. We extend sincere condolences to all Maureen’s family. Maureen Grady is greatly missed and fondly remembered, and her service will always be honored here at APCC. She has indeed gained our gratitude and friendship forever.
